Live to work or work to live?

What’s more important in life? Money or happiness?
Many have told me, under the wrong pursuance, that there is no happiness without money. I don’t completely deny it but the statement has the dependency on the absolute requirement of the money for happiness. For example, if I don’t have money at all, not even for food then I will certainly be unhappy because begging for food will strip me of my integrity. However, if I have just the right amount in hand to pay for my food and accommodation then there’s no need for me to be unhappy.
Isn’t it correct that we need money only to pay for what is required for living? (Impulsive shopping is certainly not the requirement of living.)
What does that money do to you, which sits in bank all your life with you sitting on it thinking you would need it for your old age? How much would you need in your old age? By that time, you would be left with zero materialistic desires anyway. Your wealth will be enjoyed by others in succession (if that what makes you happy, then I back off here.) Would you rather suffer in your young age?
I also need money but just enough to pay bills to survive, travel and explore different lands, meet interesting people and get inspired. How much do I need for this?
Should I work like a slave for someone for eleven months a year and take a month ‘vacation’, run after a career, get morally depleted?
OR
Should I work freelance, earn, pick up my backpack and just go anywhere any time I want?
So what do you think is more happiness? Being free or being a slave?
I know most people ‘believe’ that having a brand new mobile or a car or a stay in a 5 star hotel is happiness. I ask them “Are you sure?”
For me true happiness has never come from money. Yes, but when I feed stray animals or a homeless or when I pay for a homeless person’s shower and get him/her new clothes and fresh meal or paying school fee for a poor child, I find the true joy and a purpose of life much better than staying at a five star hotel and posting pictures of its pool on Facebook for people to see.
Why do most people believe in wrong pursuit of happiness?
For me wasting my life running after being successful in career is missing out on all the great things in life that are out there right now at this moment. Why should I miss out on the current moments in the run for the moments in the future?
My career is being happy.
I will work part time, read, help, travel.
All those who have objected on my choices, should back off.
